Review: Copic Multiliner SP Black 03

Readers of this blog brought Copic pens to my attention as I talked about Sakura Pigma Microns and other drawing pens, and boy am I glad they did.  I had been meaning to pick some up for a while, but never got around to it.  Then, out of the blue, Marianne from the excellent Copic blog I Like Markers (and who also happens to be the product specialist for Copic Markers) offered to send me some samples to try out.  Needless to say, I was a very happy Pen Addict the day my Copic package arrived!

Out of the group of pens I recieved, the Copic Multiliner SP caught my eye, mainly because that was the model I had heard the most about and was planning to buy first.  On top of that, the pen is flat-out striking to look at.  The long aluminum barrel makes for a lightweight and well-balanced writing experience.  The tip performs admirably as well, laying down a very solid and dark black line.  I need to spend more time with it, but this pen is definitely one of my favorites.

An added bonus with the SP model is that the ink is refillable and the tip is replaceable, so you can keep filling up this fine looking barrel as long as it doesn't vanish from your desk in the dark of night.

If you want to learn more about Copic pens and markers, drop by Marianne's blog I Like Markers and spend some time going through the archives.  She does an amazingly thorough job.

Look for more Copic product reviews soon - and thanks again Marianne!

looks ace - I've long considered picking one (or two) of these up, but based on this, I think I'll certainly do so.

Love the 'I love markers' blog too. Very useful stuff in there.

I was very close to purchasing these based on your review; however the website I was using (dickblick.com) mentioned that they contain some sort of carcinogen. It's too bad, because these sounded perfect.

Hmmm - can you send me the link to where you see that ahmed? I'm not seeing it offhand and I'd like to get some clarity.

ahmed,

They contain Carbon black, which if it is unbonded is marked as a carcinogen according to CAL Prop 82. However, the Carbon Black in the multiliners is bonded, or else it wouldn't work in a pen format. This needs to be corrected because the pens are non-toxic (by Japanese and international standards.

These pens are made with no animal by-products as well.

Thank you for the clarification Marianne.

Whew, thanks for clarifying Marianne. The page I was looking at had a little CAL PROP 65 icon, which if hovered over gave the warning about a cancer-causing chemical being present. This icon is also on the right side of the pens being sold, in the MSDS column. I was also further worried when I looked at the Copic Catalog, as the Copic Markers were listed as 'non-toxic' in their features but the Multiliner SPs were not. I apologize, as I did not mean to cause anyone alarm; if the pens are as they say you are then I am once again looking forward to purchasing them!

Thanks for pointing that out Ahmed - I can safely say I learned something new today!

Ok, something carcinogen to the state of California. virtually every product has a chemical known to the state of California to cause cancer

Yes that CAL Prop (sorry you were right, Prop 65 not 82-I'm thinking something else) freaked us out when the site you're looking at first mentioned that they were labeling it that. We didn't dispute it quick enough. Strangely, the ink is exactly the same as our disposable multiliners, but those didn't get a cancer warning from that company. Weird.

If people are still concerned, they should avoid eating the pen (and the aluminum casing probably isn't good for your teeth anyways).
